House Cat
LE GRAND CHAT POLYMORPHE EDITION
Le Grand Chat Polymorphe (1968) by French artist François-Xavier Lalanne
I never wanted to be rich. I wanted to be the type of persona surrounded by objects like this.
There are certain objects that completely rearrange the way I think. This was one of them. Before I discovered François-Xavier Lalanne, I don't think I had ever considered that a piece of furniture could make me feel anything. A cabinet was a cabinet. A table was a table.
Then I saw a bronze cat that opened into a bar.
I've had this photo saved for years.
Not because I expect to own one, but because it reminds me that the things we live with don't have to be predictable. They can be funny. They can be theatrical. They can make absolutely no sense to anyone else.
That's probably why Lalanne's work has become so collectible. He didn't just design furniture. He gave people permission to live with imagination.
I think that's why I keep coming back to it.
LIEBABY Approved isn't really about buying the same things I would buy.
It's about learning to look for the things that make you feel something.
If I ever walk into your house and find one of these waiting in the corner, I'll know everything I need to know. We'll probably get along..
